Monsoon is something that attracts me in quite a different manner for traveling. Rain, clouds, greens and hills are kind of my love. Planning for hill stations in monsoons won’t come to me as a surprise but I’m a sceptic. I have traveled miles, people, hills, beaches and lives to explore the world. My this post is about experimenting and experiencing! Here I have listed 5 best hill stations in India for Monsoon season.
The places I have visited in monsoons throughout my life, Munnar is the best of them. Munnar, situated in the Western Ghats range in Kerala (India) is such a beauty of nature. It’s green beauty will let one spellbound. A green carpet of tea gardens. It can easily be compared with a water colour painting of an artist. Munnar can easily be reached by rental cars from Kochi. Kochi is connected with almost all leading Indian airports. The road trip from Kochi to Munnar was a great experience. Temperatures gradually decrease as our car started to catch the mountainous region and the surrounding view became the celestial beauty of nature. Best time to enjoy your monsoon vacation in Munnar is August. Although monsoon arrives in Kerala on June.
Sunshine part… 😀
One of the most popular holiday destinations in India, Pahalgam is still avoidable for many in monsoons. But it shows an angelic beauty in monsoons. Pahalgam, a town of Jammu and Kashmir state. Monsoon stays here for three months, July, August and September. Pahalgam beautifies herself in quite an artistic way in monsoons. Although it becomes humid throughout the day but you can enjoy your coffee just staring at the Lidder river and valleys. Every year in the months of July-August, Amarnath Yatra (Hindu pilgrimage) starts from Pahalgam (Chandanwari, 16 kilometres from Pahalgam). Pahalgam is well connected with Srinagar and other cities. Jammu and Kashmir has their own airports.
Darjeeling, a hill station in West Bengal. Situated in the Himalayan range, it is one of the favourite destinations to spend monsoon vacation and the bonus point is a sip of Darjeeling tea. Although tourists sometimes avoid this place during monsoons for torrential rainfall and landslides but it has greater surprise for all who visit Darjeeling during monsoons. It is a land of some stunning natural views with rains. Monsoon season starts here from June and stays till September. Nearest airport is Bagdogra Airport. Rental cars and buses are easily available from here to reach Darjeeling.
You have to be lucky enough to see the beautiful view of Kanchenjunga…
When it comes to the best hill station destinations in monsoon season, Ooty is one of the most beautiful places to visit. This hill station is situated in Tamilnadu state and Nilgiri hill range. Ooty has a lot to offer in monsoons. From beautiful gardens, lakes, hills to forests. The fresh green surrounding will definitely make your soul fresh as well. Nilgiri tea will let your trip joyous. Nearest airport is Coimbatore. It is well connected with cabs and other transport from Coimbatore, Bengaluru and other cities.
This was an extra point: seen two rainbows at a time. 😀
Kodaikanal is a hill station, situated in Tamilnadu. It considers as the ‘Princess of Hill Stations’. Kodaikanal, the land of hills, lakes and greeneries will give an ultimate travel goal to travelers in monsoons. Its scenic beauty becomes more wonderful in monsoon season. Seems to be fresh and new all around the corner of Kodaikanal in rainfalls. Nearest airport is Madurai airport and well connected with several cities by bus and rail services. Although Kodaikanal is also connected with other nearest airports: Coimbatore airport, Tiruchirapalli International Airport.
Essentials to carry in travel bag for Monsoon Vacation in Hills:
> Don’t try to predict temperature. Carry sufficient amount of warm clothes.
> Keep umbrella or raincoat handy in backpack.
> Carry basic medicines (especially for fever, diarrhoea, cough and cold etc.)
> Use shoes that are compatible for rainy season (avoid slippers).
> Put ziplock bags in backpack (in case of heavy rainfall passports, electronic goods, money etc. can be stored in these bags).
We generally have a perception of avoiding hills in monsoons for landslides, heavy rainfalls, slippery roads, delayed flights and rails for bad weather. But trust me, mountains has a lot to share with us in monsoons. It will be a lifetime experience! So start planning on getting ready for hills in this monsoon.
